Scuba Mask

A scuba mask is used to prevent water from obscuring a diver’s vision. They are made of various materials usually with tempered glass for clear vision and silicone or rubber materials around the sides for a good seal to the face. Unlike goggles which only cover the eyes a diving mask covers the nose as well allowing the diver to relieve increased pressure on the eyes and face that occurs at lower depths.

Divers have to learn how to replace the air in their scuba mask underwater. It is one of the most important diving skills and can give a diver confidence even if their mask is knocked off underwater. Special care is also taken when entering the water to prevent the mask from failing.

Some scuba masks cover the entire face and are incorporated into the regulator as well streamlining the mask. This allows for easy communication because there is no regulator in the mouth obstructing speech. When fitted with a radio transmitter communication between divers and dive boat is easy and is highly preferred amongst professional divers. Regularly rinse a mask with fresh water and store in a cool dry place to get the most use from the mask.
