Scuba Equipment

To stay underwater for an extended amount of time special scuba equipment is needed. The most basic supplies are a tank filled with compressed air or other breathing gas, a mask that covers the eyes as well as nose, a regulator to breathe and exhale the air from the tank and fins to move around underwater. A wetsuit is used in cold waters that are common deep underwater.

Scuba equipment is highly reliant on technology for survival. In the past dive times and distances were very limited due to the equipment used, dive bells, hollow reeds, and then heavy metal diving helmets. None of these were self contained underwater breathing apparatus’ but they allowed for exploration of underwater wrecks, fishing and dock repairs.

Modern scuba equipment was developed by Jacques Cousteau in 1943 and marketed successfully as the Aqualung. This was the first time every piece was incorporated into a unit that was small enough for an individual to wear alone and easily maneuver underwater. Since then scuba diving has become incredibly popular and accessible for almost anyone.
